Prevent Pool Drownings
Swimming pools provide hours of fun for many children each day. Many parents never stop to think of the many dangers a backyard pool poses. Owning a swimming pool, also comes with responsiblity. It only takes a minute for an unattended child to drown and drastically change a parent’s life forever. Following a few simple rules can mean a life time of good memories or an eternity of regrets. The first and most important precaution for home pool owners is to make sure you have a fence that is 5 feet tall around the perimeter. The fence should be chainlink or any other material that does not allow a small child to squeeze through or climb. Make sure the gate latches securely when leaving the pool. Install the latch well out of reach for small children. The other numerous precautions that should be taken are as follows:
| ● | Install an underwater pool alarm. A door alarm should also be installed on the door leading to the pool if the house is used for an entrance to the pool. |
| ● | A Motor powered safety cover can provide protection along as its rated for adult weight. |
| ● | Teach children to swim at an early age. The “experts” believe a child is ready to learn by age five. I personally taught my children younger. |
| ● | Make sure there are no toys or colorful objects floating in the pool when not in use. Small children will take delight and may fall in when reaching for one. |
| ● | NEVER leave a child unattended, not even for a minute! |
| ● | Never let children or adults swim alone. |
| ● | A solar cover can be a death blanket if a person falls in with it still on. |
| ● | Avoid the use of acohol or drugs when in the pool area. About half the drownings associated with teens over 14 were due to alcohol or drug use. |
| ● | Be prepared for emergencies. Adults supervising the pool should be CPR certified. Have a plan in place. |
